After the first drive in this old Lada, I notice the "tap" in the speedometer. It is pretty noisy, but doesn't affect the speedometer readings. Both the kilometer (mile) counter and the speed needle reflected the reality.
With the 1 owner history of this car, and the reassuring paperwork that came with it, I don't have any doubts about the mileage on the clock, but I for sure want to get rid of the noise it makes.
First step; taking out the speedometer-housing. Although I have a service manual for the 2101 Lada, it didn't help me a lot. No pictures there and just a vague description "remove the cluster by pressing both leaf springs".
The Lada Owners club of Great Brittain on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ladaownersclubofgreatbritain) helped me to take the first step. But to help others tackle this issue, I've made some pictures.
Getting to the back of the speedometer was a bit of a hassle, but after that the problem was solved quickly. The end of the cable was "thicking" in its housing. A little white grease solved the problem.
Sometimes repairs can be done on a shoestring budget ;-)
