Seat repair

On the "To do list" was the repair of the driver side seat. The reclining function didn't work anymore.

Since there were marks of an pipe wrench on the knob, it's probably broken. But first we have to investigate what happened.

Removing the Lada 2101 seat

  • slide the seat in the utmost forward position
  • at the rear of both sliding rails is a cross head bolt, unscrew them
  • slide the seat in the utmost backward position
  • on the front of the sliding rails is 1x cross head bolt and 1x a 13mm nut (which you unscrew from below).

Functions of the Lada 2101 seat
  • the handle on the centre side of the vehicle has 1 function; move down and you are able to slide the seat
  • the other handle (the big round knob) has got 2 functions; turn the knob and you can fine-adjust the reclining of the back. For function two, you push the knob to the ground, then you get the rapid reclining function of the back

And now the reality...
* a couple of hours later *, ok... that explains a lot;

Somebody when for a drastic solution, while they could have solved the problem in a more civilized way for under € 5,-.

On the https://ladapower.com website you can buy the original bracket and the modified one. And that is exactly the solution I go for.

Plus I will swap the seat sliding brackets for new ones, since the left bracket was "stuck" and is worn out beyond repair. Because of that, I had to hammer out the bracket, which took a lot of extra time.

After a lot of cutting all the old "repair" welds were sliced away. The newly new old stock parts fitted well and are welded into position.

Some grinding to create a smooth finish and ready for primer. Frame in mat black and the new sliding frames in anthracite grey.

Since the seat was dismantled, I took the time to make a temporary repair for the crack in the vinyl upholstery, getting rid of the rust on the springs and fill the seat with 1cm new foam, for a more comfortable ride.

After some cleaning the seat went back into the vehicle. Compared with new vehicles you directly appreciate the simplicity of the Lada. Try to fit an entire front seat in a 2017 car without making scratches to seat or vehicle.

Seat mounted, crossed "off" the to do list. And ready for many miles more.

Historical plates

One of the first improvements was replacing the modern yellow EU-license plates for more time approiate historical plates. Simple job.... Untill the moment, that you realise that the modern plates are larger. In fact the yellow plates were screwed to the vehicle with the outer mounting slots. So we now have a lada with 1 hole left to the rear plate, and 1 hole to the right. We will fix that later on. Modern plates are installed with plastic frames, commonly (anti theft) in combination with rivets or screws. For our authentic look we didn't want to dammage the plate on the front surface. We went for PVC blocks, carefully positioned on the rear of the license plate. The PVC blocks are pre-drilled with M6 thread. With the rear now in a more historical look (we also did take off the plastic "katalysator-emblem", it's time to move to the front of the vehicle. Again the original brackets are too wide. So we made new brackets o...
